What the producer says:

Clark Estate crafts single vineyard wines from the picturesque upper reaches of  both the Awatere and Wairau Valley of Marlborough where the vines are subjected to the harsh climatic conditions such as high winds and cool temperatures. The vines struggle and produce small but intensely concentrated berries.  Our growers, Kevin and Tracy Johnston, who meticulously tend their Pinot Noir vines, produce fruit of outstanding quality year after year.

Vintage:

The 2017 season, with a cool spring and low summer temperatures, was a challenging but very rewarding season.  The shoot growth was slow and fruit set was lacking on many of the bunches, reducing the yield of the Pinot Noir to nearly half, resulting in small and very concentrated berries.  The weather leading up to harvest was ideal, with no rain and cool nights, giving the fruit time to develop intense flavour and colour.

Location:

This wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir grown high in Wairau Valley of Marlborough, New Zealand.

Terroir:

The terroir of the Upper Wairau is ideal for Pinot Noir. Rich Clay soils for ideal water retention and a steep north facing slope to intercept just the right amount of sunlight, all combining to ripen the fruit with intense flavours and colour.

Process:

The fruit was cold soaked over 4 days before being inoculated with a mixture of selected yeast and indigenous yeast. The cap on the ferments was plunged into the juice up to three times a day to extract colour and fine tannins from the skins. Once dry, the wine was pressed of the skins and stored in barrels to undergo Malo-Lactic fermentation and then left for 9 months.

Winemaker:

Clark Estate is a passionate family wine business that prides itself on innovation and quality.
The journey began when Peter and Jane Clark made the decision to venture to Marlborough and plant a vineyard to live off the land.  Over time, the business has evolved to include their son, Simon, who is now the family winemaker, creating wines of world class quality and his sister, Sarah who drives the sales and distribution division.

Clark Estate takes bold steps to stand out from the crowd and is not afraid to show what can be done.  Whether it be cutting edge winemaking, dynamic packaging or market driven initiatives such as KeyKeg to cater for the fast growing wine-on-tap market.

Clark Estate showcases the best of Marlborough wines with an emphasis on the Upper Awatere Valley.  The portfolio includes Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Riesling from the home block in the Awatere Valley and Pinot Noir grapes sourced from high in the Wairau Valley for the Pinot Noir and Rosé wines.
